Joe Evans creates makeshift conglomerations of unearthly growths – sculptures as architectural viruses (S.T.D’s), infecting space. Evans uses tactile and malleable materials as concepts, ruins as monuments, detritus and decay as substance, with the glow of synthetic and artificial life forms, splattered with acidic over-saturated colour. Evans creates expansive overpowering installations, with groups of beautifully grotesque anthropomorphic sculptures. Evans attempts to configure a personal order to the universe and control it with knowledge of the past but with a sci-fi imagination of the far future. Through re-use, and recycling Evans inquires into the inherent qualities of seductive materials and utilize their properties to transcend their normal places within the material world. Evans seeks to illuminate and exaggerate the other-worldly aspects of artificial and synthetic everyday materials.
